Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, South Wales on September 13th 1916. His parents were Norwegian, and were called Harald and Sofie. He went to Repton school, in Derbyshire, and left school in 1933.

His first job was in Africa, with the Shell Oil Company. In the second world war he fought as a fighter pilot, and was badly injured when his plane crashed. After the war he worked in America, and soon started writing stories.

His very first children’s book, written in 1943 was called The Gremlins. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the President of the USA liked it so much he was invited to the White House and became friends with the President, Franklin D Roosevelt.

He wrote a number of books and short stories for adults, many of which were televised as the hugely popular Tales of the Unexpected.

But it was as a children’s author that he found greatest fame and satisfaction, saying “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers…Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful.” Millions of fans around the world agreed and have chuckled and gasped at his amazing stories. His mesmerising stories, written in sizzling, sparkly language, will lead you into adventures you’ll never ever forget!

From 1945 until his death, he lived at Gipsy House, in Buckinghamshire, where he wrote his famous children’s books. He died in hospital in Oxford, on November 23rd, 1990. His books have continued to be read and loved, and have been made into a number of hit films, including Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You can even visit the Roald Dahl Museum in the village where Dahl lived for most of his life.

In 2009 the Roald Dahl Funny Prize was established in his memory.

   A good book which shows what it is like being born in the olden days. putting a dead mouse in the sweet jars maybe wasnt the greatest idea in the world. Well Roald Dahl probably learnt a lesson when rubbing savlon on his whip-marks…

   I think this is a really interesting book about the childhood of Roald Dahl. He is by far my favourite author and an insight to his childhood is pretty fun. His overly strict school and Dahl’s independent mindset is completely cringeworthy! Some parts of the book can get boring and random but the stories are absolutely funny. I don’t think this is a must read book.

    I can relate to this book so much.It is a awesome book I recommend it to every one I know I have got the whole Roald Dahl series and this is one of my favourites.I would recommend reading this book 100%

    I love this book soooo much and it was a joy to read well done Roald Dahl! This was such an amazing book to read because instead of reading a book which is obviously made up and not real, you can read about events that are real and you can see what happened in our favourite authors lives. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves autobiographies! Xx

    This is a really funny book about Roald Dahl as a boy. He was a bit of a trouble maker and laughed out loud at the part where he and some of his friends put a dead rat in a jar of gobstoppers so when the shop keeper – a horrible old woman – put her hand in the jar she got the fright of her life ! Great read, very funny ages 11+

    I remember reading this at school. I loved reading about Roald Dahl’s life as a child, and found myself laughing until I cried, or speechless with shock in different parts. I loved it when he talked about the wonderful sweet shops, and all the tricks he got up to as a child.

    This is a excellent book. It shows how life was not easy for Roald Dahl when he was growing up. There are some very sad bits (i’m glad my teachers are not that bad !) but theres lots of funny bits I wont tell you because you must read it. Sometimes I forgot this is a TRUE story which is why it is so funny and sad at the same time.

    VERY, VERY, VERY good, as it was written by the world’s number 1 storyteller! And because it was unfortunately interesting, as Roald Dahl had such a hard life.
