We have chosen Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild as our Mini Book of the Month for March – the perfect story to challenge younger children to try a longer book. An action-packed story of friendship and fitting in, with full-colour artwork all the way through, it features Dav Pilkey’s classic mix of cheeky humour and child-friendly cartoons. Yet the complex vocabulary and engaging themes of this full-length graphic story, which include bullying and believing in yourself, will also get children building their lexicons and thinking about their place in the world. Dav Pilkey, who grew up with dyslexia and ADHD, is the best-loved creator of the Captain Underpants series. His books have sold millions of copies and are celebrated both for stretching keen young readers and hooking in reluctant older ones. This story has all his classic hallmarks, including drawing exercises and ‘flip-o-rama’ pages that get children thinking about how stories are made, and learning to create their own.
Disaster! Dog Man has been locked up in the dog pound for a crime he didn’t commit. His pals are working hard to clear his name, but right now our hero is in trouble. He’s no ordinary dog – he’s half human! What will the other hounds think? Luckily, Dog Man isn’t the kind of dude (or dog) who sits with his tail between his legs for long. Soon it’s not just about how he’ll fit in – but how he’ll break all the other dogs out! Woof!

Lexiles are the global standard in reading assessment. They are unique as
they are able to measure a child and a book on the same scale – ensuring
the right book gets to the right child at the right time.
